Panties in a twist

It’s been a good week to be a Gooner. We’ve brought in our second signing of the summer (albeit a replacement for a departing player). Debuchy has come in and I for one am really happy with the addition. A solid right back with Premier League experience and seems to be ahead of Sagna in the pecking order with France. It seems like a logical choice and one that will, fingers crossed, cause as little disruption as possible within the squad. On top of that we seem also to be on the verge of signing David Ospina for around £4m. That seems like a bargain to me for someone who did fairly well for Columbia at the World Cup. From what I’ve seen and heard online he’s not just heading our way to play second fiddle to Scz but is a fiercely competitive guy and wants to be No.1. This bodes well for us as it will ensure we get the absolute maximum from either keeper if only to hold their place in the team. Man City have the policy of having 2 players for every position, which is why I believe they won the league last time out, and we are very nearly there. If we complete the signing of Ospina it leaves us needing a CB and a DM to complete what would surely be a title challenging squad. I’m not really sure who’s out there in CB form that we’ve even been remotely linked with bar Ahly Fathi (the Egyptian RB/CB that we trailed first in 2004!). However the Khedira, Schneiderlin and Bender stories continue to rumble on. I have a feeling that they are likely to be concluded this week so fingers crossed we’ll be toasting a further signing 7 days on.

Moving onto Mourinho…I am overjoyed that he’s now made 2 digs at Arsenal over the last week. Number 1 was at Jack Wilshere and his Vegas smoking shenanigans for being the wrong type of role model to kids and number 2 was to say that Cesc didn’t want Arsenal he always only wanted Chelsea.

Firstly he may well be correct in his comments about Wilshere, but it’s the fact that he’s the only manager in the league to have said so thus far. I think it’s clear that he sees us as a genuine threat to his specialness which is music to my ears. Secondly to say that Cesc always only wanted Chelsea is laughable and has only been said to provoke a reaction. It’s like a public trolling – feed it with a reaction of any kind and he gets what he wants.

The main point in the above is that he’s started early with the sledging, before a ball has been kicked, which makes me incredibly happy. That one of the most successful managers in the game is a little scared and of the competition and already seems to have his panties in a twist speaks volumes for how much we’ve moved on from this time last summer.

We also got our pre season under way with a 2-0 win over Boreham Wood in which we played some decent stuff. The two moments of note being the Tomas Rosicky outside foot pass for the first goal and Chuba Akpom’s ridiculously good turn in the lead up to the penalty for the second. Diaby also got some minutes in which for some reason still fills me with hope that he’ll replace Vieria this season! Rambo also seemed to enjoy the captaincy and there were no injuries during the game. A good days work. The only niggle we’ve heard about is that of Arteta who had to pull out of the game altogether. Let’s hope it’s nothing too serious.

All in all it’s been a good week for us with the signings rolling in regularly. If we can keep this momentum as well as keep Vermaelen we’ll be ready for battle come August 10 for the first of a few trips to Wembley (hopefully!) this season.

Have a good week people.
